Every year there’s a new diet trend, nutrition app or recipe book that everyone is raving about. However, from airfryers to keto, the one-size-fits all solutions are not the panacea that they are made out to be.

Why? Because we are all different!

As a qualified nutritionist, I'm passionate about debunking the myth that one diet or nutrition app fits all. 

Just think about how different we all are - in how we look, think and feel. The same is true for your nutritional needs.

For example and not universal; someone with a fast metabolism, (the process by which your body converts the food you eat into energy) may thrive on a higher carbohydrate diet, as they will be using up energy.  Whilst someone with a slower metabolism, might find a lower carbohydrate, higher protein diet more beneficial for maintaining energy levels and managing weight.

Our cultural heritage also plays a significant role in shaping our dietary habits and preferences. 

Consider the Mediterranean diet, rich in olive oil, fish and vegetables, which has been handed down through generations and is known for its heart health benefits. This diet suits those of Mediterranean descent not just culturally, but also biologically, due to generations of adaptation to these food types. 

On the other hand, East Asian diets, high in rice, soy and seafood, reflect the genetic and cultural adaptations of those populations, showing how cultural backgrounds can impact nutritional optimisation.

Personal life experiences significantly affect our dietary needs and how we respond to food. Individuals who have to manage health conditions on a daily basis, such as diabetes; with a diet low in sugars and refined carbohydrates have a unique nutritional response compared to those without such conditions. 

Similarly, long-term vegetarians may have a different gut microbiota composition, affecting nutrient assimilation from plant-based sources compared to meat sources, further illustrating our need for personalised nutrition plans.

A balanced diet rich in nutrient dense wholefoods, including fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, healthy fats and wholegrains, is generally recommended for most individuals regardless of their metabolic rate.
